Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Although
built around 1112, it wasn’t until 1868 that French Explorer
Henri Mouhot discovered Angkor Wat and brought Angkor to the
public eye. In 1907 the first tourists arrived, 300 of
them. There were 1 million visitors in 2006. This is
the largest of the Wats (temple) and the most visited.
Walking around you get a sense of the magnitude of the place and
can imagine the elephants, tigers and monkeys around at the time
it was built. The Cambodian people are very friendly and
very helpful. No Indiana Jones types here as all the trees
have been cleared and the temple is undergoing some
reconstruction. If you’re looking for the Indiana
Jones Adventure, check out Beng Mealea. Make sure to wear
comfortable walking shoes as everywhere is a bit of a walk on
un-even stone walkways.
